Neben seiner Ausbildung zum Facharzt für Allgemeinchirurgie und Unfallchirurgie sowie Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie sowie Sportmedizin hat sich Prof. Habermeyer seit 1982 wissenschaftlich und klinisch auf das Schultergelenk spezialisiert und 1984 an der Chirurgischen Universitätsklinik München die erste Deutsche Spezialambulanz für Schulterchirurgie eröffnet. 1986 erweiterte er neben der üblichen offenen Schulteroperation sein operatives Spektrum sowohl mit der Schulterarthroskopie als auch mit der Schulterprothetik. 1990 erschien sein erstes Lehrbuch zur Schulterchirurgie, das heute in der 5. Auflage mit über 15.000 verkauften Exemplaren das Standardlehrbuch im deutschsprachigen Raum darstellt. Nach Gründung des Deutschen Schulterzentrums 2012 verfügt Prof. Habermeyer heute über eine breite chirurgische Erfahrung mit über 20.000 schulterchirurgischen Operationen, davon über 3.000 Schulterprothesen. Mehr als 100 wissenschaftliche Publikationen und jahrzehntelange Kongresstätigkeit geben seine klinisch wissenschaftliche Erfahrung weiter.
Am 1. Oktober 2020 eröffnet Prof. Dr. med.Habermeyer das Schulterzentrum Prof. Habermeyer im Gebäude Marianowicz Medizin mit angeschlossenem MRT und CT sowie interdiziplinärer medizinischer Zusammenarbeit einschliesslich Physiotherapie und Kräftigungstherapie. Prof. Habermeyer bleibt unverändert Hauptbelegarzt an der ATOS Klinik München.
Prof. Dr. med. Peter Habermeyer zählt auf dem Gebiet der Schulterchirurgie zu den weltweit führenden Spezialisten. Als ehemaliger Präsident der Europäischen Gesellschaft für Schulter- und Ellenbogenchirurgie (SECEC) wird er seit Bestehen der FOCUS Ärzteliste regelmäßig als einer der renommiertesten Schulterchirurgen in Deutschland aufgeführt. Nach Mitgründung der Marke „Deutsches Schulterzentrum München“ praktiziert er seit 2020 in eigener Praxis – dem „Schulterzentrum Habermeyer“.
